What did it do?

Rec Room was a Seattle-based social gaming platform where players spent time together and built their own rooms. It was founded in 2016 and made its name on virtual reality headsets. A USD 100 million round led by Sequoia valued it at USD 1.25 billion in March 2021, and a USD 145 million round led by Coatue took that to USD 3.5 billion in December 2021. In all it raised USD 294 million.

Why did it shut down?

Rec Room reached 37 million users by December 2021, according to TechCrunch, but never turned that audience into lasting profit. The company wrote that its costs always ended up overwhelming its revenue. It laid off about half its staff in August 2025. On 30 March 2026 it announced it would close, also citing the shifting VR market and headwinds across gaming. Snap confirmed that it had bought select assets and hired some of the team into Specs Inc., its AR glasses unit, with no price disclosed. The servers went dark on 1 June 2026.

The story

Rec Room was founded in Seattle in 2016. Started by Nick Fajt and Cameron Brown, it built a place where people could meet in a VR headset, play games and make their own rooms.

2021 was its best year. In March it raised USD 100 million led by Sequoia at a USD 1.25 billion valuation. In December Coatue led a USD 145 million round and the valuation rose to USD 3.5 billion.

The user numbers never brought profit. About half the staff were laid off in August 2025. On 30 March 2026 the company said it would close, admitting it had never worked out how to make Rec Room a sustainably profitable business. Snap took some assets and some of the team joined its glasses unit, but nothing suggested the platform would live on.

The servers went off on 1 June 2026, leaving behind more than 150 million players over ten years and USD 294 million of investment.

Lessons for founders

  • Do not treat audience growth as proof of a model: with 150 million players and costs still above revenue, the problem is unsolved. Measure what a single user earns you early on.
  • A valuation set in a hot round becomes the bar for the next one: after USD 3.5 billion in December 2021, new money gets harder to find, so plan your cash as if that round cannot be repeated.
  • Watch the hardware market you depend on as a separate risk: when VR shifted, the platform felt it, so do not leave your audience tied to one class of device.
