## What did it do?

BioWare was a game studio in Edmonton, Canada, that made story-driven role-playing games. It was founded in 1995 by Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip, who had just graduated from the University of Alberta's medical school. With games such as Baldur's Gate (1998), Neverwinter Nights (2002), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003), Mass Effect (2007) and Dragon Age: Origins (2009), it became one of the pioneers of a style in which the player's choices change the story. From 2007 it worked as one of Electronic Arts' studios.

## Why did it shut down?

On 21 October 2026 Electronic Arts announced a restructuring affecting about 400 people, roughly 3% of its workforce. According to the Bloomberg report cited by GameSpot, about 50 of those jobs were at BioWare. In a letter to staff, EA chief operating officer David Tinson and chief studios officer Cam Weber wrote that the company had taken a "hard look" at its business over recent months and that the next Mass Effect game, in early development, had been cancelled. Investment was redirected to sports titles, Apex Legends, Battlefield, the next Star Wars Jedi game and an Iron Man game. The same day, BioWare confirmed on X that the studio was closing.

Two pressures stand behind the closure. The first is the studio's recent games: Anthem, released in 2019, fell short of expectations and its servers were switched off on 12 January 2026. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released on 31 October 2024, reached 1.5 million players in the last three months of 2024 according to EA, about half of what the company expected. After the cuts of January 2025, the studio shrank, according to Bloomberg, from more than 200 people two years earlier to fewer than 100. The second is EA's new ownership: the USD 55 billion buyout by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, announced on 29 September 2025, closed on 4 August 2026 and loaded the company with debt. According to GameSpot, EA had told investors in March 2026 that it planned to save about USD 700 million.

## The story

In February 1995 in Edmonton, three young doctors fresh from the University of Alberta's medical school, Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip, put in USD 100,000 each to start a games company. Yip stayed in medicine; Muzyka and Zeschuk left it for games.

Baldur's Gate, released in 1998, made BioWare one of the best-known names in role-playing games. Neverwinter Nights (2002), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) and Jade Empire (2005) followed. The studio's signature was that the player's decisions changed relationships with characters and the ending of the story.

In November 2005 BioWare joined Pandemic Studios under VG Holding, backed by Elevation Partners. On 11 October 2007 Electronic Arts announced it was buying VG Holding: up to USD 620 million in cash to stockholders and up to USD 155 million in equity for certain employees. The first Mass Effect came out the same year, followed by Dragon Age: Origins in 2009 and the online Star Wars: The Old Republic in 2011. On 18 September 2012 Muzyka and Zeschuk announced their retirement from the games industry.

Over the following decade the studio made bets that moved away from the single-player stories it was good at. Anthem, an online game released in 2019, fell short of expectations; EA switched off its servers on 12 January 2026. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released on 31 October 2024, reached 1.5 million players in the last three months of 2024 according to EA, about half of what it expected. In January 2025 the studio was downsized and, according to Bloomberg, fell below 100 people.

Two months after EA went private through a USD 55 billion buyout on 4 August 2026, the company announced cuts affecting about 400 people on 21 October 2026. The same day BioWare wrote on X: "BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending."

The story shows how a studio founded by three doctors in 1995, whose games are still played three decades later, can close on the balance sheet of a company where it no longer makes its own decisions.

## Lessons

- A studio's value lies in its team and its creative identity; once you are acquired, someone else decides about that identity in a hard year. When you negotiate a sale, discuss who decides what on a bad day as well as the price.
- A big bet away from your strength burns both money and trust: Anthem, the 2019 live-service attempt of a studio known for story-driven games, ended seven years later when its servers went dark.
- The gap between expectation and result can be a reason to close on its own: 1.5 million players in 2024 is not a small number, but for a product budgeted and planned for twice that it is half a success.
- A large debt-financed buyout puts cost pressure on the new owner, and the least profitable units move to the top of the list. If you sit inside a large group, the group's balance sheet is your risk too.
